Clay Wars
Anybody experience the mud slinging against the turns three and four wall? We would wander around the pits drooling over all the cars until we heard the roar coming from the bullring as the hardtops got the green flag. We would then rush over to the wall to watch the race and behold, we were met with huge golf ball size rocks of clay. Of course you learned quick that you had better duck or you will go a week with clay stains embedded in your face.
Same clay that would permanently stain the paint of the hardtop if you didn't get it washed off right away. I remember going to the car wash on the way to the pizza joint after the races. "Gotta get rid of the clay before it stains." Must have had some kind of acid that ate into the paint. I don't know if it stained other paint, but it effected Gandy's lavender pink paint. I always wished he would have run a black car. Would have gotten to the pizza parlor sooner!
I was fortunate that someone warned me my first time and we ducked every time the cars slid past us, slinging that mud against the fence or the poor newbie next to us. Never got to see the whole race, but on any given Saturday night at Vallejo Speedway, the clay nearly removing one's face was a required experience.
